Mesopotamian culture
Reproduction of a fragment from Goddess Ishtar‘s Gate, rebuilt in 575 B.C., now at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. Ishtar’s Gate was the monumental entrance in the Babylon City and, as the name suggests, represented a gateway for the divine powers. „Muszhuszuszu” in Sumerian, a griffin red as the flames, represented on the gate of Ishtar with snake form, symbolizes a sacred animal associated with Marduk, a Babylonian God of war. It guarded the soul of the god and defended his authority. In iconography, „Muszhuszuszu” has snake head and body, rear paws of a lion, front ones of a strong eagle, tail of a scorpion and two horns.
Veneer stone and oil colors.
Size: 24x17cm.
